Miniatuare Book Necklaces

Hello all.... A slightly different direction for my miniature books. I have made these in the past but not this many. I personally think some of the chains are too heavy. So I am working on learning some new techniques for ribbon or leather necklaces next time. But they were fun to make. I am actually calling a couple of them "Steampunk" But in my head I always think of them as a wizards book..hehehe..

Denver Miniature & Doll Fall Show Part 1

Back from the Denver Miniature show.. Had a great time! So fun to hang with the other mini collectors and artists.. I took show coverage photos for Dollhouse Miniatures Magazine this year. I always get a guilty pleasure from being able to hold and examine miniatures from some of the most fantastic artists.. I also freak out a little as I have some very precious items in my possession for short periods of time. hehe.. Below are two artists I met and photographed. I will have a part 2 and maybe 3 posts in the next few days

First is Sylvia Mobley. I was so lucky I got to hang with here a little during and after the show..

First miniature table.. 10 years ago

Cleaning up some paperwork this week and found some printouts of my first table I sold on eBay. I printed it out because I was so excited about how much it went for:-) This was one the reasons I sold my gift shop and decided to sell online full-time.. I was shocked to realize it was almost 10 years ago (in a few months) that I sold this table.. I had been making miniature food for a few years before that.. My mom suggested that I post that somewhere in my logo.. So I did. est. 1999.. Over 10 years of mini magic..:-)

My open book looks a little amature.. but You can see I made a unicorn horn, a bottle of eyeballs and a scroll. I also was already experimenting with gold embossing. I love the look of the table but I have since stopped decorating the top of tables because you really can't see the detail after I glue all the stuff on the top. I usually load up my tables so you can't even see the top now. But maybe I should make a table with gold embossing on the top again?

I made a raven claw, mushrooms, and even a staff for this table..
I remember I sold a whole witches cottage on ebay around this time. I can't find even one photo of that cottage I made. Such a shame.. Hopefully the photos are saved in some dark corner of my computer or a lost CD somewhere..

Special Commission Table and 200th follower...

Been trying to catch up with some of my commissions. Thought I would share one with you.

This is a larger scale miniature table.. Not really sure what scale it would be. A collector from the Netherlands asked if I could make a wizard table that would fit into his display cabinet. The table is a little over 8" long and 5" tall without all the stuff on top..

Just for fun I thought I would post some videos of Sally Wallaces Miniature Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In honor of the last movie due out.
Below are 3 videos where she narrates and shares details of her castle. It was a collaboration between Sally and Rik Pierce. Many .... many artists pieces are inside. I am proud to say that some of my pieces are in there too. Specially Books, paper stacks, scrolls and Orreries.. But also a lot of the food I recognized as mine. This was back in the time when I used to make lots of food items.
Sally was one of the reasons I was able to start working on my miniatures full time. She really helped me expand my miniature making too. She would just say "do you think you can make some chocolate frogs?" Then I found 0ut yes I could make them. heheh.. I believe she is the first person to ask for a open book from me... many years ago.. enjoy..

I have been trying to catch up on a few commissions and took some time off to go on vacation:-) I have been really lucky to have a lot of my work shown in magazines the past few months. I wanted to share the new Dollhouse Miniatures mag. Michael and Martha Puff's "The Dragons Eye" in featured. Really love how it turned out. American Miniaturist Voodoo Shack in the Bayou

So excited I got my American Miniaturist with Martha Puffs Voodoo Shack. It is such a cool building. I was lucky enough to see it when they were still working on it. Now that it is finished I am so proud to have so many of my miniatures in there. It is a great issue Michael Puff give tips on how to create rust and age ceder shakes. Totally worth buying the magazine for that. I also have a voodoo doll "how to" and there are many other artist "how to's" in the issue like "Kat the hat lady" gives a wonderful tutorial on how to make a leather pirate hat.. There are many other artists I am forgetting.. I am only showing a few of the pages below. But it is a 9 page spread.

Love all the aging techniques on the front of the building.

Miniature Reliquaries

I have had in my mind to make some miniature Reliquaries for some time. I think they go along with my interest in curiosities and curiosity cabinets. I wanted to have one for my curiosity cabinet I made recently. But never got around to it. I was spurred on in the past few weeks with the news coverage of Pope John Paul II's beatification.

Telescopes, Butterflies, and Bat's

I don't really do steampunk miniatures but I like the Victorian scientist style. Like in The Time Machine by H. G. Wells. The new Time Machine movie (made in 2002) had not so good acting but I just loved his laboratory.. the butterfly miniatures remind me of that. They are fantasy:-)

Hi everyone. Sorry I have not posted in awhile. I have been working on some commisions. I do have a batch of metal miniatures that I will be able to show hopfully by monday. Telescopes, Orreries, candlabras, and a few new surprises.

I also just finished a little "how to" for American Miniaturest. Did anyone see my lolly "how to" a few months back ? I never got a copy. I do have one coming in the mail. I will post a little about it when I get it.

I just wanted to post an interesting little tidbit that happened to me on facebook. I found a long lost family member. My mothers cousin (I think that makes him my second cousin:-). It is even more interesting because he is making dollhouses and furniture. I thought that was so cool!! It must run in the blood somewhere.. Tia's Vieux Carre' Voodoo

I have been working on a voodoo doll “how to”. So of course I made a few more voodoo dolls to sell. They are always fun to make. I thought I would take the time to photograph them in my voodoo shop. I have been meaning to take some “moody” photos of my shop anyway.

I am always adding new items to my shop. You can see the Mardi Gras flag I just got as a gift. Someday I will finish the upstairs too. Probably some kind of séance room.

The wall behind the chair is going to look like "house of blues" style in the future. I went to the house of blues in Las Vegas and it totally gave me so much inspiration on how I want my voodoo shop to look. Very touresty of course.

The gang.. The alligator man was inspired by a similar creation I had seen in a New Orleans Voodoo shop. Baron Samedi in the top hat still needs a bottle of bourbon and a walking stick. The Skeletons were made by Patricia Paul and the carnival mask is by Diane Paone.

Moody photo.. I like to turn off the lights in the room and look into the shop as if I was walking buy..

Versailles View and more Butterflies

I was able to finish Marie Antoinette’s window this weekend. I am really happy with how it turned out. This bespaq room box usually has a back on it behind the cove. But I took it off and created a window with a view of The Versailles gardens and palace. I really opened it up. It really is a pretty small room so I think this made it more grand looking. I have seen a couple of Michael Puff’s room boxes with this type of faux window in the back in person. I was just amazed by them!! so I decided to try it.

I will be adding a few gold leaf and brass accents to the front of the box, but otherwise I am pretty much finished..

Wood floor finished from a kit.. I have a beautiful rug that looks great in here but now I can't bare to cover the floor up. Hehe!!

Todd told me he used silk taffeta and antique lace on the dress..

Todd finished her stocking and shoes even though they are under her dress and can't be seen unless I lift her dress.. I just LOVE... that..

I never really watched the TV series.. I know it is shameful of me.. Heheh.. Maybe someone out there in Blog land can enlighten me. I am trying to watch them on Hulu.. But I just love Christina Ricci’s character on the movies.. I think she will be going in a crib I have. She is surrounded by a few spooky items I have been collecting for the haunted house and will probably now go in Wednesday’s Room box.

Butterflies Under Glass

I have been excited to share this project because I love how they turned out. It was a special order that I went crazy on. This is for a customer that has a miniature scene of a world traveler and butterfly collector.. It is also steam-punk style. So these are fantasy creations from my own mind. I have big plains for these butterflies. In the weeks ahead I will be showing more butterfly projects.. I don't want to give too much away right now..

I really like this one above.. It has a little glass slide like you might put under a magnifying glass. But i gave it my own spin..
I while back I did make some similar magnifying lenses with test-tubes but these are the first with butterflies..

Most of these butterflies are Jeannetta Kendall kits. Some I have made myself.. But hey are so freeking hard to cut out..hehehe and Jeannetta's kits are so beautiful.

I will have more butterfly items in the next few weeks.. I really have a lot of fun special orders I am working on this month.. I will aslo be sharing photos of the open book "help name my book store" contest very soon.

Corsets Cakes and Presents

Things are getting exciting for my Marie Antoinette room box. It is nearing completion.. That is saying a lot for me. I don't have too many finished projects of my own. I always feel guilty when working on personal mini projects.

This weekend I received news that my Marie doll is done and I should be getting her this week. Yippeeee!! I also got a wonderful gift in the mail. Dominique of http://minicurioscabinet.blogspot.com/ sent me two tiny and perfect pairs of shoes for Marie. Maybe i made a fool of myself gushing over them on here blog. heheh!! This is a dressed chase that I had decorated some time ago. It was a pretty cheep chair that I had redressed. I think she did a wonderful job. I have temporarily laid Marie's corsets, fans, and a masquerade mask on top. I am praying Marie will fit on the chair. If not I will have to find another chair and then I probably won't have room for this pretty chair in the room.

Miniature Pouf's and Hats

Beautiful wigs made by Todd Krueger (who is also working on my Marie Antoinette doll:-)

The big wigs were called a poufs’. They were a way for women to express them self without talking.

Some were called sentimental poufs’ and might have included flowers, or if you are Marie Antoinette it may include something like a ship which was here way of expressing her opinions on politics. But her wigs were looked on as very frivolous (they were frivolous). I don’t think she realized her image was becoming out of control until it was too late. Later in life she completely stopped all the fancy dressing and started wearing plain cotton dresses and straw hats.

Pretty hat that I bought at the Good Sam show. I think it is more like her style when she was older but I just fell in love with all the detail.

In the photo above you can see Marie Antoinette in her plain cotton dress and straw hat she wore later in life. But when she was painted in portraits like this people thought she was running around in here under garments. Sometimes you just can’t win..

Wish they showed more of her with this wig in the movie..

A very crazy Pouf'.. I have read that some could be 3 feet high and then you add feathers to that:-)

I just love this photo from the movie. I love the white white hair and then the pale pale blues and pinks of the flowers.

I would love to have a couple of hats like these. Very small and dainty. I know there are a few wonderful hat artists out there. If any one of you wold like to try please let me know..

I think this is such a beautiful bust of Marie Antoinette. If you look closely you can see how finely detailed they carved the lace. I also just love her hair. I like to think this is really what Marie Antoinette looked like. She commissioned many of these busts to be made. Marie was known to have a Hapsburg lip or Hapsburg jaw. Not as bad as some in her family (you can read more here and here). It comes from a lot of interbreeding in her royal Austrian family. I don’t really notice it in her portraits, but I think you can really see it in this bust..

Marie Antoinette’s Pearls and Pugs....

Pretties form Marie Antoinette’s Room box part 2. This time I have some of her favorites. Jewelry and her much loved pugs.

Marie Antoinette was known to love pearls and diamonds. So I have tried to find her some jewelry that would fit that era. I really struggle with making sure the items in her room box fit the time period. I have loosened up my rules a little because after all I am looking into putting a pair of converse shoes in the room. Hehee!!

The infamous necklace from the “Affair of the Diamond Necklace” Scandal. Many historians believe it led to the French revolution. Probably can’t work it into the room box. She never wanted the necklace. I don’t think it was ever really in her possession. It cost as much as a whole man of war ship of the time.

Marie Antoinette’s Diamond Earrings

Diamond encrusted feather broach given to her by her husband. He did not really like all the high feathers she wore in her wigs. I guess he thought this would be classier.

Three little pugs hand sculpted by Karl Blindheim

Marie was known to have a little pug named Mops, and she was forced to separate with him after they traveled from Austria to France. This was because she was supposed to give up all ties with her native land, some stories do say she was later reunited with Mops. I have also read that she had at least 3 pugs at one time. I am so lucky to have received these perfect little guys as a gift form a wonderful friend.

I have a small shoe fetish....

Just a small shoe fetish. Part of the reason I decided to make a Marie Antoinette room box was being able to collect lots fancy little shoes. Most of these shoes are made by "the doll cobbler" there are a couple I am unsure of. I love them all.. and am sure she will be getting more.

This last photo is taken from a scene in the move "Marie Antoinette" directed by Sofia Coppola. I want to find a miniature pair of lavender converse for my room box if possible. This would be my little homage to Sofia Coppola because here movie is what led me to read the book the movie was based on and then to make the room box. Does anyone know where I can find a "real size" pare of shoes like this? My green converse are getting warn out..Heheh!! New Batch of Wizard Wands

Finally got around to photographing my wands and a few wizard staffs.

Most of these are hand carved. I used a dremmel.. I think that is still hand carved:-) A lot of them have real stones. Like Amethyst, garnet and real opal stones.
Here is a photo of my wizard modeling one of the staffs. The wizard was created by Todd Krueger and he will be the owner of my "White Raven Tower" someday..

First.. Let me say thanks so very much for all the help and ideas. It really REALLY gave me a lot of inspiration.. Second I have decided I have 3 winners..

First winner is Patty Benedict because Lola picked her name and she was very sure of herself:-)…. (see photos below) Also the Proprietor will probably have "Tabularius" somewhere in the name and that is Patty’s idea..

Second winner is Daydreamer (sorry not sure of your name) because I am going to use your idea … "Spellbinders".. Underneath the sign.. Probably… “Keeper of rare books and manuscripts”.. not sure yet. “Spellbinders” just seemed to click, but that is not to say I did not have a hard time making a decision:-)…

Third winner is Ewa of The Old Maid because I have made a decision to call my wizard tower “White Raven Tower” I liked the “white” because he is a good Wizard. He is holding a black raven now. but I may have that replaced or just have a white raven displayed in a special place in the tower. Not totally sure of his name yet. Maybe Zenith? After a distant grandfather of mine.. It kind of matches up with all the celestial instruments that will be in the castle too. I will try and post some photos of him soon.

So you three will have to email me with your decision of what kind of books you would like?

Help me chose a name for my book shop... open book giveaway..

Today I took some photos of my book shop.. This was a Rik Pierce “Flourish and blots” class I took a few years back. It is always hard for me to finish my own personal projects. I feel guilty that I should be working on minis to make money hehee!!. I usually have to just take a couple weeks vacation for myself to finish projects. I did that for my Tia Dalma Voodoo shop and my Honeydukes.. What I really loved about Rik’s class is that you spend 4 days straight (with homework too) working. Then you go home with an almost finished building.

Still trying to figure out a name for the shop.. thinking.. If I would choose a name it might give me inspiration and motivation to get working on it.. I would love to hear ideas out there from blogland.. This was actually Julia Jeffreys of www.bearcabinminiatures.blogspot.com idea. Thanks so much JuliaJ

Below are details about the shop and It’s keeper (who does not have a name either)..

This is not a Harry Potter themed shop. It will be filled to the brink with stacks of books,.. like “flourish and blots” But ..I want this book store to show off all the books, papers, and scrolls I make. The books will not be new.. They are rare and antiquated books and documents. And you may find magic or spell book too.. Kind of like the book store on “the never ending story” But an older shop.

Right now there are some of the candelabras, orreries, and telescopes I am selling displayed in the shop, but they are only temporary. In the end it will be books, books, books…

As you can see from the photos there are a lot of architectural details that may be worked into the name. There are gargoyles, dragons, skulls, and an owl carving in various places on the stonework.

The shop owner was made by my friend Todd Krueger. He is a fantastic doll with soooo much detail.. I tried to show some if it in the photos. He has tiny pearl buttons on his cuffs and a ring with a red stone. His face is so detailed and expressive. Hard to see in the photos but he has blue glass eyes and it is strange to say but I love his eyebrows.. Hehehe..

Fun part….. If you follow my blog (by clicking the “follow” button on the left side of the screen) and post and idea (or ideas) for the name of my shop or my Shop owner below I will enter you into a drawing. If your name is drawn I will make you a miniature 1/12^th scale open book to your specifications. So the winner could choose the theme of the book and color of the leather binding.. If you have a lot of name ideas that is great but I will only enter your name once to the drawing. Otherwise I may have a mess on my hands. Heeheh!!

I will stop the entries on Sunday the 23rd. So that gives about 10 days for all the creative minds out there to start cranking..

My mermaids new home

I thought I would share my mermaids fish bowl. She usually stays in my curio cabinet. But I finally found her a permanent home in a bowl (with a lid to keep the dust out). The porcelain top was made by Sylvia Mobly and then made into a mermaid by Todd Krueger. She is surrounded by her treasure horde. Possibly in the future I may display her like she is on an island surrounded by water inside the bowl. That my lift here a little higher. But I haven't quiet figured out how I will do that:-)..

Todd is also dressing me a Marie Antoinette doll that I am so very excited to get. I will be showing off pieces of my Marie roombox soon.

also.... can anyone tell me how to break your blog up into different pages?? or does it do that automatically? I don't want to have so many photos to load on one page and jam up someones computer..

Miniature Potion Bottles
A new batch of miniature potion bottles for sale. These are really just as fun to make as the "real size" bottles, and they don't take up any room. He!!
Included are Dragon embryos and some new "fiji mermaid" bottles. I also have finished some hanging bottles in this batch.

Halloween Prop Potion Bottles
I finally got around taking some photos of my "real size" potion bottles. I made these just for fun to display around my house. I have been collecting the bottles for a long time. I had WAY too much fun making them.
The labels are the same labels I made for my miniatures. I thought it might be fun for everyone to see a larger version of the graphic. You can see much more of the details.
I hope to add more every year. I still need to fill a few of the bottles. Trying to deiced what would be best liquid to use? Maybe I will have to dump them out and refill them every year. Today I bought one of fake snakes that grow larger when you put them in water. I am going to try and use them in one of the bottles. I do keep a vanity in my room with Halloween theme items all year around. But I kind of have a raven or black bird them for my Halloween decor.

Hopefully tomorrow I will have some photos to sow of my new "mini" potion bottles. I have spend too much time playing with my real size bottles.

I just realized I forgot to put my "black death" potion bottle in the photo. It has a rubber rat inside:-)

Something for Halloween...

Miniature Vampire Hunter Cabinet - I really like how this turned out so I thought I would show it off. I made the whole thing form scratch. It is a version of my Apothecary Cabinet. I wanted to find a way to incorporate a vampire skull into a vampire hunting kit. I think it worked out well and it has a bit of Victorian look to it.

Not very good a writing about myself or my art but I thought I would give it a try.

Here is my most recent.. A curiosity cabinet. I have been thinking of making one of this for awhile. I had so much fun making it I am thinking of making a whole curiosity shop for myself..
